In today’s culture, the term narcissism is a buzzword that is widely overused and yet we don’t truly have a strong understanding of the complexities of this personality disorder. Cecilia shares the criteria for a diagnosis, highlighting the key points to understand while diving into one specific tactic, gaslighting. 

Narcissism is a personality disorder found in the DSM-5 which outline 9 key criteria including a sense of self-importance, preoccupation with power, lack of empathy, and entitlement.

Gaslighting is a manipulative tactic to make someone doubt their perceptions and experiences. There are 4 specific gaslighting tactics: withholding, countering, diverting, and trivializing. Gaslighting is intentional and manipulative and is meant to create confusion and doubt it creates in the victim.

  1. "I'm sorry that you feel that way."

  2. "I can accept your faulty perception of me."

  3. "I have no right to control how you see me."

  4. "I guess I have to accept how you feel."

  5. "Your anger is not my responsibility."
