Embracing the Ripple Effect: A Fresh Perspective on Change

How often do you find yourself with a lengthy list of all the things you want to change in your life? Between social media feeds filled with "life-changing hacks" and Google searches offering countless strategies to make everything easier, we're constantly bombarded with messages about how to control and manipulate change.
But here's the real talk — change is inevitable. And thinking we can somehow control every aspect of it? That's a bit egocentric (yes, I said it!).
What If We Shifted Our Perspective?
What if, instead of trying to control change, we embraced it as a naturally occurring experience? An evolution of your heart, mind, body, and soul — everything about you in one package.
Because that's exactly what evolution is: the shifting from one thing to another. It's the process through which living organisms develop and diversify from earlier forms of themselves.
Wouldn't it stand to reason that who you are today is an evolved version of who you were 10 years ago? (A pretty rational thought, right?) And by that same logic, the future version of you — whether that's one, five, or ten years from now — will naturally be different from who you are today.
The Magic of the Ripple Effect
Here's where change gets magical. When you welcome change in one area of your life, there's a ripple effect that touches everything else. You can't piecemeal it or contain it in neat little boxes.
Think about it:
-
Change your morning routine? It creates ripples throughout your day.
-
Shift your eating habits? Watch how it affects your energy, mood, and productivity.
Imagine dropping a small stone into a calm lake. At first, you see the immediate impact where the stone hits the water. But then, inevitably, ripples spread outward, eventually touching every part of the lake's surface. It may not be obvious at first, but it definitely happens. That is the magic of change.
Healing Through Indirect Change
After 25+ years in what I'll call the "human change business," I've discovered something profound: sometimes you can heal parts of yourself without directly focusing on them.
Quick reality check: You can't always force change by staring directly at the problem.
Want to build confidence? Try focusing on setting better boundaries instead of obsessing over confidence itself.
We often get stuck looking at one part of the wall, banging our heads against it, trying to push this huge boulder of change. We become so fixated that we forget we can leverage change through smaller, seemingly unrelated adjustments along the way.
Trust the Process (No, Really)
Whatever you're working on right now, whatever changes you're making — even if they seem small or unrelated to your ultimate goal — rest assured they're contributing to a ripple effect of positive transformation in your life.
You don't always have to stare at something to change it. Sometimes, focusing on the surrounding elements creates the most profound transformation.
So next time you're feeling down or full of self-doubt about your progress, remember this: You just threw a small stone into a calm lake. You may not see all the ripples yet, but they're spreading. And before long, you'll witness firsthand that meaningful change is not only possible — it's already happening.
